Celebrating the Dakar winners

A special occasion for Team Audi Sport and the Audi RS Q e-tron¹ at the Audi facilities in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm following the success at the Dakar Rally. The winners Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz, as well as their teammates Emil Bergqvist and Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger, celebrated together with the Audi workforce, drove their off-road prototypes equipped with the alternative drivetrain concept² through the two premises and signed autographs. The Board of Directors of AUDI AG also welcomed the successful drivers who made motorsport history at the Dakar Rally at the end of January.

Historic success for Audi Sport at the Dakar Rally

Team Audi Sport wrote motorsport history with the first triumph of a vehicle with an alternative drivetrain² at the Dakar Rally. After 7,900 kilometers, the Spaniards Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz crossed the finish line as the winners with an advantage of 80 minutes. The special feature: their Audi RS Q e-tron¹ is powered by a high-voltage battery and an energy converter². After the joy of the victory in Saudi Arabia, with which Audi ended the Dakar project, it was clear to the three driver crews and the team that they also wanted to celebrate the success “at home” at the Audi facilities.

Cheers in Ingolstadt

At the Audi facility in Ingolstadt, the workforce had plenty of opportunity to experience the Dakar vehicles live and to share in the success of Team Audi Sport: led by the Dakar winners Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz in the Audi RS Q e-tron¹ with starting number 204, the three driver crews drove along lines of enthusiastic Audi employees. A small bivouac set up around an original service truck on the piazza added some rally flair. There, the drivers signed autographs and took selfies with the employees. The drivers then attended the works meeting, where they were introduced to the workforce by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. “Victories such as the success at the Dakar Rally are among the greatest milestones in Audi’s motorsport history,” says Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “For the enthusiastic Audi employees, it was a great experience to see their successful motorsport drivers here in Germany.”

Visiting Heilbronn and Neckarsulm

Off to Baden-Württemberg: The Dakar drivers were also warmly welcomed at Audi Böllinger Höfe. They then continued to the Audi Neckarsulm facility, where the workforce also saw the three driver crews thanks to a factory tour with the Audi RS Q e-tron¹. The drivers signed more autographs, signed T-shirts and model cars, and attended the works meeting. Racing drivers visiting the Audi premises is a longstanding tradition at Audi: in the past, this also included the drivers from the Le Mans programme, DTM and customer racing, all of whom visited the employees after great successes.

Team party in Neuburg

A big party for Team Audi Sport in Neuburg an der Donau marked the highlight of the celebrations. The team enjoyed a magical evening at the home of Audi Sport. CEO Gernot Döllner and board members Gerd Walker, Hildegard Wortmann, Jürgen Rittersberger and Renate Vachenauer honored and congratulated the team around Audi Head of Motorsport Rolf Michl on stage. Oliver Hoffmann, who leads Audi’s Formula 1 commitment as the overall manager and general representative of the board, also celebrated with the Dakar team. The winners Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz, who were honored on stage together with their team, not only traveled home with beautiful memories after the magic evening, but they also had two specially designed deck chairs in their luggage as a gift from the staff.

Dakar trophy joins the collection

For the very first time, the Dakar Rally winner’s trophy was also on display in Neuburg. After the celebrations, the striking trophy with the logo of the famous desert rally found its final place amongst the silverware at Audi Sport. It now complements the impressive collection of the most important trophies from four and a half decades of motorsport at Audi.
